The reading nook you will actually use
A reading nook is not defined by bookshelves. It becomes real when the chair feels good for an hour and the light reaches the page without glare.
Choose comfort before style
Sit in the chair as you would when reading. Your feet should rest easily, your back should feel supported and at least one arm should have a place to land. Add a footstool if the seat is deep.
Place the light beside you
A lamp just behind the shoulder usually lights the page without shining directly into your eyes. Adjustable shades are useful; decorative low-output lamps are not enough on their own.
- Keep a table within easy reach for a drink and glasses.
- Add a washable throw where it can be reached without standing.
- Store only a small current reading stack nearby.
Make it a habit: Leave the chair clear. A nook covered in laundry or cushions stops inviting you in.
Frame the little view
Face a window, artwork or plant if you can. The nook should offer a pleasant place for the eyes to rest between pages.
